Dentures are a great way to maintain a confident smile. They are an affordable, non-invasive way to maintain a mouth full of teeth. Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. There are two types of removable dentures; partial and complete. Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain, while complete or full mouth dentures are used when all of the natural teeth are missing.
Partial dentures are used when only a few teeth are missing and the denture fills in the gaps. A partial denture or bridge is constructed with replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base. The base is sometimes connected by a metal framework that keeps the denture in place. The bridge replaces teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the empty space and then attaching the artificial teeth to them. Once the bridge is cemented in place, it also prevents the remaining teeth from changing positions. Partial dentures can be attached by metal clasps or devices, called precision attachments, to the existing teeth. Crown attachments generally provide better support and look more natural.
Complete or full mouth dentures are a full set of replacement teeth that are fitted onto a gum-colored acrylic base. The upper denture has a plate that covers the roof of the mouth and the lower set is a horseshoe that rests on the gums and bone tissues.
